Medicinal plants

African geranium - Pelargonium sidoides

Pelargonium sidoides has antibacterial and immune-boosting properties. This tincture is therefore a good alternative to conventional antibiotic treatment for respiratory diseases. Pelargonium extracts are valued as infection blockers and are well tolerated.

Fields of application

In Switzerland, pelargonium extracts are officially approved only for the treatment of acute bronchitis, i.e. an acute inflammation of the bronchial tubes. Clinical studies have been carried out which suggest that taking the medicine can reduce the severity and duration of the illness. The medicine is usually taken three times a day. The duration of treatment should not exceed three weeks. Side effects may occasionally include gastrointestinal complaints and, rarely, hypersensitivity.

Botanical characteristics

The geraniums are a genus of flowering plants in the stork's bill family. The 220 to 280 species are common in southern Africa. Some Pelargonium varieties can be found on every corner, or rather on every house wall. Geraniums belong to the Pelargonium family and are very popular with us as bedding or balcony plants. Pelargoniums can flower almost all year round and have heart-shaped, dark red flowers. However, the red Pelargonium root is used as a medicinal drug.
