Rhubarb– Rheum palmatum
Cakes or compote – that is what most people associate with rhubarb. However, the common rhubarb we know from the kitchen is just one of many rhubarb varieties. Rheum palmatum, also known as medicinal rhubarb, has a long tradition in the treatment of constipation and, when applied externally, for inflammation of the oral mucosa.
Sweet and Sour Hemostatic Agent
Fields of application
Rhubarb root is a herbal medicine with laxative and astringent properties. It is used internally for short-term treatment of constipation and externally for skin and mucous membrane disorders. In Switzerland, rhubarb is used for inflammations in the mouth. Adstringents such as rhubarb root are used medicinally to stop minor bleeding or to treat inflammatory, weeping and itchy skin conditions. This drying agent is also found in wine, where it causes a ‘furry’ mouthfeel.
Botanical characteristics
Rhubarb is a plant species in the knotweed family. It is widespread in Asia. Rumex species grow as perennial herbaceous plants. They form thick underground rhizomes as storage organs. The squat roots are long and the stalk is erect, often hollow, smooth and usually stiff-haired.
