True passionflower – Passiflora incarnata

This fascinating climbing plant is an all-rounder: a gentle aid to sleep, a sedative and antispasmodic relaxant. Even the Native Americans used its healing and sometimes intoxicating effect. Today, passion flower is a natural aid in times of impending overload, hectic and stress.

Allows relaxation to flourish

Fields of application

The ingredients of passion flower alter the transmission of stimuli in the brain, where nerve cells communicate with each other and messenger substances are released. It works precisely where feelings of sadness and fear arise. If just thinking about the challenges of the next day drives up blood pressure or a lack of relaxation even prevents you from falling asleep or staying asleep, passion flower extract can alleviate nervous restlessness. It is not known for certain whether the flavonoids, vitexin, coumarin, harmonine or kaempferol contained in the plant are responsible for the effect. Furthermore, not all of its ingredients have been identified to date. What is clear, however, is that the ingredients contained in the leaves of Passiflora incarnata help to relieve tension, irritability and anxiety. Tea or a tincture can also be used to successfully treat back pain and tension, heart pain and gastrointestinal complaints. The calming effect also has a positive impact on the cardiovascular system and thus on blood pressure.

Botanical characteristics

The passion flower family includes around 530 species, the majority of which are native to South and Central America. While the herb of the plant is used for the production of pharmaceuticals, the fruits of this climbing plant are widely known as passion fruit. Particularly striking are the brightly coloured flowers, which stand out from the green plant and range in size from less than a centimetre to 18 centimetres in diameter.
