Important information

Those infected with diphtheria initially have the symptoms of a simple angina. Depending on the progression, heart muscle weakness, nerve palsies and other organ diseases may also occur. Despite treatment, about 10% of infections are fatal. However, the spread of the disease has been greatly reduced by the diphtheria vaccination. Today, the vaccine offers a very high level of protection (95%). Thanks to the vaccination, the immune system can react quickly when it comes into contact with the pathogen. A diphtheria vaccination is therefore highly recommended.

Ideally, the vaccination is given three times during childhood. A fourth dose is recommended between the ages of 25 and 29. Thereafter, the vaccination should be refreshed every 20 years, and every 10 years from the age of 65.
Vaccinations at the pharmacy may only be carried out if there is no contraindication, no pregnancy (except for vaccinations based on a doctor's prescription), no immunodeficiency and no autoimmune disease.

Diphtheria is an infection of the throat and nose.
The disease is usually transmitted via droplets, rarely through the skin.
Diphtheria is caused by bacteria that are found all over the world. The pathogen produces a potent toxin that can cause permanent damage to organs such as the heart and liver.

In Switzerland, a combination vaccine is used. The vaccine also provides protection against whooping cough and tetanus. Another vaccine also protects against polio and hepatitis B.
The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) recommends the vaccination to all adults in Switzerland.
