- Diphtheria is caused by bacteria that are found all over the world. The pathogen produces a potent toxin that can cause permanent damage to organs such as the heart and liver.
- In Switzerland, a combination vaccine is used. The vaccine also provides protection against whooping cough and tetanus. Another vaccine also protects against polio and hepatitis B.
- The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH) recommends the vaccination to all adults in Switzerland.
