CRP is the abbreviation for C-reactive protein. It is a protein that can be detected in the blood and helps the immune system to locate a site of inflammation. In the event of infection, inflammation and tissue damage, the level of CRP in the blood rises – in the case of inflammation, for example, it can very quickly increase to between 10 and 1000 times the normal value. The value alone does not indicate the cause, but the pharmacist or doctor can usually determine this in a conversation.
At the pharmacy, a few drops of blood are taken from your fingertip. Using the blood and a high-tech rapid test, we determine your current inflammation level (CRP) within five minutes. Based on the measured CRP value, it can be determined whether the inflammation is bacterial or viral. The value also indicates how severe the inflammation is.
A follow-up check (e.g. after taking antibiotics) can show whether the treatment has worked.

The CRP value can also be used to distinguish whether the inflammation was caused by viruses or bacteria, since a viral infection causes no or only a small increase in the CRP level.
Seasonal flu can thus be distinguished from other illnesses. In severe bacterial infections, there is a sharp increase in C-reactive protein (CRP) within a day (or 24 hours), which is weaker or absent in viral infections.
A significantly increased CRP value can indicate the need for antibiotic treatment or optimally adapted medication.
