Pertussis (whooping cough) vaccination

Whooping cough (pertussis) is an extremely contagious infectious disease that affects the respiratory tract and can affect people of all ages. The pertussis vaccination offers good protection against it.

Important information

Two to three weeks after infection with whooping cough, flu-like symptoms appear, accompanied by a cough. The initial mild cough intensifies, and complications such as vomiting, pneumonia and seizures can occur. Healing then takes weeks to months.

The protective vaccination helps to prevent such a course of the disease. This is a combination vaccine. It protects against whooping cough and tetanus as well as diphtheria.

The vaccine should be administered five times during childhood. The first three vaccinations should be given at 2, 4 and 12 months. The additional two doses should ideally follow at 4 to 7 years and at 11 to 15 years.

Adults: If you are unvaccinated, the FOPH recommends a single whooping cough vaccination at the age of 25. This vaccination corresponds to the necessary booster vaccination for people who have already been vaccinated.

Booster vaccinations every 10 years are recommended for people who are in contact with infants under 6 months of age and pregnant women.

Pregnant women are also recommended to be vaccinated against whooping cough so that they can transfer protective antibodies to their child.

Vaccinations may only be given in pharmacies if there is no contraindication, pregnancy (except in the case of vaccinations prescribed by a doctor), immunodeficiency or autoimmune disease.
