Polio (poliomyelitis or polio for short) is a viral disease transmitted by smear infection, which has still not been eradicated.

Infection often occurs through contaminated water or dirty hands. In 90% of those affected, the disease occurs without symptoms. However, if symptoms do occur, they manifest as flu-like symptoms, gastrointestinal complaints and, in extreme cases, flaccid paralysis in the arms and legs.

There is no treatment for polio, which is why vaccination is the only effective form of protection.

The vaccine should be administered four times in childhood, at 2, 4 and 12 months of age. A final dose should be given between 4 and 7 years of age. After this, 95% vaccination protection is achieved.

After the basic vaccination, regular booster vaccinations are generally no longer necessary, unless you are traveling to a risk region.

Vaccinations may only be given in the pharmacy if there is no contraindication, pregnancy (except in the case of vaccinations prescribed by a doctor), immunodeficiency or autoimmune disease.

The polio vaccination is based on a killed virus. Thanks to the vaccination, the body can react quickly in the event of an infection.
Today, practically only children under the age of three are affected by polio. For unvaccinated adults, immunization is therefore only necessary when visiting a risk area.
For vaccinated adults, a single vaccination is sufficient to refresh their protection. For unvaccinated persons, three doses over a period of eight months are necessary for protection.
As polio viruses can also be repeatedly spread to polio-free areas, vaccination against the virus is essential.
