Rabies is a potentially fatal viral infection of the central nervous system that is transmitted to humans through the bite or scratch of an infected animal or through contact with its saliva. The vaccination provides reliable protection, but does not replace the need for re-vaccination after exposure.
In Switzerland, rabies vaccination is recommended for people who have regular contact with imported mammals. In travel medicine, pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) is recommended for people visiting areas with terrestrial rabies (Asia, Africa, South America). In this case, a first dose of the vaccine is administered one month before departure and a second dose at least 7 days later. A booster vaccination is recommended after 12 months if there is a continuous or repeated risk of exposure.
