Tetanus is a life-threatening disease caused by bacteria. The bacteria enter the body via skin lesions and attack the central nervous system. However, you can protect yourself against it with the tetanus vaccination.

Important information

To prevent tetanus, it is therefore important to treat wounds properly on the one hand and to be vaccinated against tetanus on the other.

The tetanus vaccination teaches the body to defend itself against the bacteria by building up immunity. The tetanus vaccination is only available as a combination vaccination with one or more of the following vaccinations: Diphtheria, Whooping cough, Polio or Hepatitis B.

The Federal Office of Public Health (FOPH ) recommends vaccination at 2, 4 and 12 months of age. Two further doses should be administered: one between the ages of 4 and 7 years and one between 11 and 15 years.

Booster vaccinations should then be given every 20 years up to the age of 65. From the age of 65, the frequency should be adjusted to 10 years.

Vaccinations may only be administered in pharmacies if a contraindication, pregnancy (except in the case of vaccinations on medical prescription), immunodeficiency and autoimmune disease have been ruled out.

The tetanus vaccination is recommended by the FOPH and offers almost complete protection.
In adults, the vaccination provides protection for at least 10 years.
There is no direct infection from person to person.
